Từ năm 1951 chia thành 2 thể loại giải là: Giải Quả cầu vàng cho nam diễn viên điện ảnh xuất sắc nhất – kịch và Giải Quả cầu vàng cho nam diễn viên điện ảnh xuất sắc nhất – ca nhạc hoặc hài.

Tên giải thay đổi nhiều lần từ khi được thiết lập và tới năm 2013 mang tên: "Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy" (Diễn viên điện ảnh xuất sắc nhất- Phim ca nhạc hoặc phim hài).
